The 67th Annual Grammy Awards turned into a groundbreaking moment for Doechii, as the rising rap star secured her first Grammy win for Alligator Bites Never Heal, earning the title of Best Rap Album.

The rising rap star has become the third female artist ever to win in this category. She joins the ranks of legends like Lauryn Hill and Cardi B, solidifying her place as a trailblazer in the rap game.

Her album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, beat out stiff competition from heavyweights like J. Cole, Common & Pete Rock, Future & Metro Boomin, and Eminem. The win is a testament to Doechii’s unique artistry, bold storytelling, and undeniable talent.

Clearly moved, she fought back tears as she got onstage to accept the award.

“I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape. I’ve bared my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety, and Gold told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me just how good it can get,” she said as she choked back tears.

“I need to thank my beautiful mother for coaching me,” she said as her mother, standing behind her onstage, walked over to her while they held hands. “There are so many people out there who probably don’t know who I am. I call myself the ‘swamp princess’ because I’m from Tampa, Florida.”

Doechii pressed on, delivering an uplifting message to viewers at home who share similar dreams to the ones she once had, stating: “I know there’s some Black girl—so many Black women—watching me right now. And I wanna tell you, you can do it,” she said through tears. “Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic, or that you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are, and I am a testimony. Praise God!”

Along with securing her first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, Doechii received nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance, in which she was defeated by Chappell Roan and Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” respectively.

In only a year, Doechii has transitioned from an up-and-coming talent to one of the most thrilling figures in rap. After winning a Grammy for Best Rap Album, releasing a successful mixtape, and completing a sold-out headlining tour, she has established her position in the industry.
