The world mourns the loss of Dora Moono Nyambe, a trailblazing humanitarian whose life was dedicated to empowering children in Zambia.
The 32-year-old teacher, TikTok influencer, and founder of the Footprints of Hope nonprofit passed away on Dec. 25, leaving behind a profound legacy of love, resilience, and transformation.
A Legacy of Education and Empowerment
Dora, who was raised in Lusaka, Zambia, discovered her life’s mission during a visit to the rural village of Mapapa in 2019.
Witnessing the impacts of poverty, malnutrition, and limited access to education—particularly among young girls forced into early marriages—she felt compelled to act.
“What struck me was their untapped potential,” Dora once said during a book event in Boston. “By the second or third day, I was asking, ‘Why aren’t these kids in school?’”
This question marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Dora relocated to Mapapa with her adoptive children and began building a school under a large mpundu tree.
Over the years, the school evolved into a thriving campus serving 350 students. It now includes dormitories, a library, and a dining hall, providing three meals a day.
The Power of Digital Philanthropy
Introduced to TikTok by one of her daughters, Dora used the platform to amplify her mission, raising awareness and funds for her nonprofit.
Her videos—garnering over 4 million followers and 171 million likes—highlighted the individual struggles of her students and celebrated their triumphs.
Through her efforts, Dora and Footprints of Hope educated 500 children and rescued over 500 from sexual abuse and forced marriages.
“Yes, there are kids that are suffering. But that’s not all they are. They are also amazing human beings,” she once said, drumming home the vibrant spirits of the children she supported.

Dora’s work transcended traditional narratives of poverty, showcasing the strength, creativity, and humanity of the children she championed. Her nonprofit employed 15 teachers and fostered a safe, nurturing environment for learning and growth.

“When I started to adopt, people said I couldn’t do it because of my age and being unmarried. One day at a time.”
