If elected president in November, presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is poised to bring significant changes to the nation’s capital.
While her policies may align closely with traditional Democratic stances, Harris’ unique background and perspectives suggest a presidency marked by generational and stylistic shifts from the Biden administration.
Harris, who would be 60 years old on Inauguration Day, represents a different generation and brings distinct life experiences to the presidency.
Moe Vela, a former senior advisor to President Joe Biden, noted that Harris’ approach would be more modern and relatable compared to the “stodgy old men” who have recently dominated presidential races.
“I think we’re going to see a modernization of the presidency,” Vela told USA Today, highlighting Harris’ relaxed and genuine demeanor as a refreshing change.
Advocating Reproductive Rights and Economic Opportunities for Women
One of the most notable differences between Harris and Biden could be their communication styles, especially on issues like abortion access.
Susan Liebell, a political science professor at Saint Joseph’s University, pointed out that Harris frames reproductive rights as a matter of personal freedom and government overreach, a stance she has reiterated at numerous events since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Harris’ personal experiences also shape her approach to economic opportunities for women.
Jocelyn Frye, President of the National Partnership for Women & Families Fund, noted that Harris’ background as a woman of color in America gives her a unique perspective on participation in the economy and addressing long-standing gaps.
A Short but Impactful D.C. Career
Harris’ relatively brief tenure in the U.S. Senate and as Vice President contrasts sharply with Biden’s extensive 50-year career in Washington.
However, her former Senate colleagues, like Sen.
John Hickenlooper, believe her energy and quick thinking compensate for her shorter policy experience. “She’s quick and she’s got a lot of spark to her,” Hickenlooper said, emphasizing her ability to energize those around her.
Maintaining Strong Connections
Despite her demanding role, Harris remains connected with her former colleagues and the California congressional delegation.
Rep. Ro Khanna recalled her warmth and dedication, noting her handwritten congratulations on his marriage and regular communication during her 2019 presidential campaign.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen praised Harris for her seriousness and engagement with both Congress and the public.
Facing Republican Criticism
Republicans have already begun framing Harris as an extension of Biden’s policies or even more left-leaning.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn criticized her on social media, while Sen. John Kennedy expressed skepticism about her seriousness. However, Vela cautioned against underestimating Harris, citing her intelligence and toughness.
“She may laugh with a bellow laugh. But this woman’s tough as nails,” he said.
Embracing Her California Roots
Kamala Harris’ identity as a “San Francisco liberal” is a legacy she proudly embraces. With her multicultural background and personal history rooted in California’s diverse landscape, she brings a unique story to the national stage.
Her parents, Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris, both met as students at UC Berkeley, and Harris often recounts her early exposure to activism during the Civil Rights Movement.
Dan Morain, author of “Kamala’s Way, An American Life,” noted that Harris’ story could only happen in California.
Her upbringing and career in the state shape her perspectives and priorities, particularly on issues like criminal justice and civil rights.
As John Pitney, a Claremont McKenna College politics professor, pointed out, Harris’ personal connections to Black and Asian communities add a passionate edge to her stance on these critical issues.
As the 2024 election approaches, Kamala Harris stands ready to bring her distinctive blend of energy, experience, and empathy to the highest office in the land, potentially reshaping the presidency for a new generation.
