A family dispute in Alabama turned deadly earlier this month when a 25-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his mother, only to be fatally shot moments later by his older brother in what authorities are calling a tragic act of self-defense.
Police responded to a shooting around 5:39 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, at a home in Auburn, where they found Traci McDuffie, 52, and her son Brandon McDuffie, 25, both deceased, according to a news release from the Mobile Police Department (MPD).
Investigators believe Brandon shot and killed his mother during an argument, prompting his older brother Brent McDuffie, 32, to intervene after being notified of the incident.
According to MPD, Brandon allegedly fired his weapon toward Brent, who then returned fire, fatally shooting his younger brother. The case has now been forwarded to a grand jury for review to determine whether charges will be filed in Brandon’s death.
Authorities noted that the death of Traci McDuffie has been “abated by” Brandon’s actions, a legal term indicating her death has been addressed due to the suspect’s own demise.
Brent McDuffie, who was identified in a Facebook post by the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Street, has not been publicly charged with any crime. The church asked for continued prayers for Brent and the family, and announced a celebration of life service for both victims on Saturday, June 21.
Family and friends have taken to social media to honor Traci McDuffie’s memory. She was described by loved ones as a hard worker who adored live music and was known for her kindness.
“There is nothing bad that can be said about her,” her sister shared on Facebook. “She will truly be missed.”
This deeply emotional case continues to develop as authorities await grand jury deliberations.
