Heartbreaking! Mother and Daughter Killed in Crash Caused by Elderly White Woman Suspected of Drunk Driving

A Wichita community is mourning the devastating loss of 42-year-old LaShea Bell and her daughter, 25-year-old A’Niah Bell, after a horrific three-vehicle crash authorities say was caused by an 80-year-old woman suspected of speeding and driving under the influence.

According to WCSC, The collision happened around 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 30, 2025, at the intersection of Central and Webb. According to Wichita police, Clowie McLaughlin, who was driving a black Chevrolet truck, struck two vehicles — a white BMW carrying the Bells and a gray Jeep driven by a 41-year-old man.

LaShea Bell died at the scene. Her daughter, A’Niah, was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries but later succumbed to them. The driver of the Jeep escaped unharmed.

Alleged DUI Driver Faces Murder Charges

McLaughlin was hospitalized briefly before being taken into custody. She has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the crash.

Police said both speed and alcohol were contributing factors.

McLaughlin was released on a $100,000 bond, according to Sedgwick County Jail records.

LaShea, remembered as a community pillar, served as a board member of a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring youth. Colleagues called her a “true champion” for her work to “surround youth with positive role models.”

Her daughter, A’Niah, was described as both creative and brilliant. A rising star in the sciences, she graduated with a B.S. in Biosystems Engineering in 2023, completed her M.S. in Biomedical Science in May 2025, and had just passed the MCAT — a major step toward medical school.

The tragedy has sparked deep grief and outrage, with many calling for accountability in cases where drunk or reckless driving costs lives.
