Inside The Final Days of ‘My 600-Lb Life’ Star Latonya Pottain: The Struggles, Dreams & Tragic Death At 40

by Gee NY

Latonya Pottain, a Louisiana woman whose emotional journey on TLC’s My 600-Lb. Life captivated viewers, has died at the age of 40.

The Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed her death on May 17, with preliminary findings pointing to congestive heart failure as the likely cause, although a final report is still pending.

Pottain’s story, which first gained national attention during Season 11 of the hit reality series, was one of deep personal loss, resilience, and a fight for health and stability. Born and raised in northern Louisiana, she was the youngest of three siblings and turned to food for comfort after her mother’s sudden death at age 12. Her father’s departure soon after left her navigating early adulthood alone, a trauma that would echo throughout her life.

Her episode on My 600-Lb. Life, which aired in 2023, followed her determined effort to lose weight and regain mobility so she could walk down the aisle to marry her fiancé, Daune. But behind the cameras, Pottain was battling depression, grief over her brother’s death, and an ongoing struggle with self-worth.

“I’m back with my trainer, I’m dieting and my weight is going down,” she told the Shreveport Times in 2023, hopeful about her plans to relocate and receive surgery. But after the cameras stopped rolling, Pottain’s reality took a darker turn.

In Feb. 2024, she launched a GoFundMe page seeking financial support after becoming completely bedridden. At the time, she revealed her weight had ballooned to 740 pounds — her highest yet — due to severe depression, backlash from the show, and compounded physical ailments including sciatica nerve pain.

“My journey with weight struggles has been a long and difficult one,” she wrote. “I became fearful of undergoing weight loss surgery… Now, I am completely bedridden and unable to get to the hospital because EMTs say transporting me would be a fire hazard due to my weight.”

Her attempt to reset her life in Houston in 2023 ended in heartbreak after she became entangled in an abusive relationship while also supporting her father, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Isolated and physically immobilized, Pottain turned to therapy and sought to reclaim control over her life—but the clock was against her.

More than just a reality TV figure, Pottain had dreams that extended far beyond her weight. Passionate about helping others, particularly young girls navigating the foster care system, she had long planned to open a group home and provide the kind of support she lacked as a teen.

“All my life I have taken care of young girls,” she said in 2023. “There’s so many young girls that have lost both of their parents… and not having anywhere to go.”

Despite her own challenges, Pottain maintained an uplifting message rooted in hope:

“Life can take a turn and you have to be positive and just remind yourself that you are special, you are somebody.”

Her death has once again ignited discussions around the physical and emotional toll of morbid obesity, the long-term effects of trauma, and the risks faced by those who often fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. While reality television can spotlight compelling personal stories, Pottain’s experience serves as a painful reminder that behind each episode is a real person facing an uphill battle with limited resources.

As fans and loved ones mourn her loss, Latonya Pottain leaves behind a legacy not just of struggle, but of strength and compassion for others. Her story—raw, unfiltered, and deeply human—is a call to take health, support, and community care more seriously.
