In a significant move for representation and justice, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Azzie Oliver as the new District Attorney for Montgomery County, following the retirement of Daryl Bailey.
This appointment marks a pivotal moment for both the legal community and the residents of Alabama’s capital city.
Governor Ivey expressed confidence in Oliver’s ability to uphold the law and advocate for justice in Montgomery County.
“Ensuring we have a safe Alabama begins with having a safe Capital City, so having our local officials embody that goal is critical,” she stated. “Azzie Oliver has dedicated most of her career to upholding the criminal laws of Alabama and pursuing justice for the people of Montgomery County. I am confident she will help us create a safer Montgomery.”
Oliver, who previously served as the district attorney pro-tem and as chief assistant district attorney, brings a wealth of experience to her new role.
Having worked closely with Bailey, she has a deep understanding of the challenges and responsibilities that come with prosecutorial duties.
In her career, she has been instrumental in protecting victims of crime and has earned the respect of law enforcement officials and fellow prosecutors alike.
“I express my deep gratitude to Governor Ivey for placing her trust in me to serve as Montgomery County District Attorney. I consider this appointment a blessing and an honor,” said Oliver.
She affirmed her commitment to serving the community and leading the office in its mission to fight for victims and enhance safety for all citizens.
Oliver is a proud graduate of Alabama State University and received her law degree from the Jones School of Law.
Her extensive experience includes her tenure as the domestic violence resource prosecutor with the Alabama Office of Prosecution Services and her four years with the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, where she developed a strong reputation for her tough stance on crime and her advocacy for victims.
Attorney General Steve Marshall also lauded Oliver’s qualifications, stating, “Nobody is more qualified or prepared for this role than Azzie, and I am fully confident she will do an outstanding job as the Montgomery County District Attorney.”
Oliver’s appointment not only reflects her individual achievements but also serves as an inspiring example of leadership for Black women in the legal profession.
