Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett admitted she is “rooting” for Canada and Mexico over President Donald Trump as they push back against him, calling it “really wild” to find herself in that position despite him being the U.S. president.
“They are really the ones that are speaking truth to power right now,” the Democratic representative from Texas said on Friday on the popular Breakfast Club podcast, alluding to the political feuds Trump has engaged in with the US’s two North American neighbors during the first month of his second presidency. “They can see what it is and they were like, ‘We are not messing with this crazy regime.’”
Crockett’s comments came a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pushed back against Trump’s threats to challenge their nations’ sovereignty.
Following the White House’s designation of Mexican drug cartels—who often acquire weapons from the U.S.—as terrorist organizations, making them potential targets for U.S. military action under Trump’s command, Sheinbaum said: “This cannot be an opportunity … to invade our sovereignty, whether by air, land, or sea.”
“With Mexico, it is collaboration and coordination, never subordination or interventionism,” Sheinbaum added. “The Mexican people will under no circumstances accept … intrusions or any other action from abroad that is detrimental to the integrity, independence or sovereignty of the nation.”
After Trump called a U.S. hockey team on Thursday—only for them to lose the tournament final to a Canadian squad—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to social media to deliver a sharp response. Referring to Trump’s repeated boasts about annexing Canada as the U.S.’s 51st state, Trudeau wrote, “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”
Meanwhile, both Sheinbaum and Trudeau’s governments have been contending with threats of steep trade tariffs from Trump’s administration. In addition, Trump unilaterally ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America and sought administrative retaliation against the Associated Press for refusing to adopt the new name. Sheinbaum, in response, threatened to sue Google Maps after the platform complied with Trump’s directive and changed the name of the international waters.
Crockett attributed her stance on Trump’s clashes with Canada and Mexico to those who voted for him in November, despite his conviction months earlier in New York on 34 felony charges.
Those charges stemmed from hush-money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels just before Trump’s 2016 election victory. However, he avoided significant punishment by defeating then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, reclaiming the Oval Office after his 2020 loss to Joe Biden.
“Y’all knew who he was when y’all elected him, so don’t act surprised,” Crockett, 43, said of Trump, 78. “You elected somebody who was actually convicted by a jury of his peers of 34 felony [counts].
“I … got no convictions, no arrests, no nothing. And I would never be qualified for president in this country in the eyes of the vast majority of them.”
Crockett also pointed to other unresolved criminal cases against Trump, including those related to his alleged mishandling of government secrets after leaving office and his supporters’ attack on the U.S. Capitol in early 2021—cases that effectively collapsed after his victory over Harris.
“But a guy who literally not only ended up becoming a convicted felon [and] also had other cases that were pending … oh yeah – he’s good to go,” she said.
Crockett, a progressive who has represented a Dallas-based congressional district since early 2023, was among roughly a dozen Democratic lawmakers who joined hundreds of demonstrators in early February to protest against Trump’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) and its access to federal financial systems handling trillions of dollars in annual transactions.
“We are not going to sit around while you go and desecrate our constitution,” Crockett said while addressing the crowd that day. “We are going to be in your face and on your asses.”
Despite Crockett’s remarks, most Democrats remain skeptical that Congress will effectively resist Trump, according to a SurveyUSA poll of more than 1,700 registered voters published on Wednesday.
