A recent poll indicates that Republican Larry Hogan, Maryland’s former governor, is currently behind Democrat Angela Alsobrooks in the state’s Senate race. Published by Public Policy Polling on Monday, the survey of 635 Maryland voters conducted on June 19 and 20 shows Alsobrooks leading Hogan by 11 points. Specifically, 45 percent of respondents favor Alsobrooks, while 34 percent support Hogan. Public Policy Polling noted minimal change in the race since just before the primary, when Alsobrooks held a 46-37 lead.
Responding to Newsweek via email on Tuesday, Hogan’s campaign dismissed the poll’s credibility, labeling it as a partisan tool due to its affiliation with the Democratic Party.
In May, Hogan secured the Republican nomination for Maryland’s Senate seat. Despite Maryland’s Democratic lean — having supported President Joe Biden by 33 points in 2020 — Hogan, known for his criticisms of former President Donald Trump, served two terms as a popular governor. He expressed a commitment to restoring a more traditional Republican Party amidst ongoing influence from Trump within the GOP.
As Democratic incumbent Senator Ben Cardin prepares to vacate his seat at year’s end, Republicans are hopeful that Hogan can make the race more competitive. An earlier Emerson College poll in May showed Alsobrooks ahead of Hogan by 10 points, with 48 percent backing Alsobrooks, 38 percent supporting Hogan, and 14 percent undecided.

Under her tenure, violent crime dropped by 50 percent and she established a first-of-its-kind unit to investigate and prosecute police and official misconduct.
In 2018, Angela was elected Prince George’s County Executive, the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the office of County Executive in Maryland history. She has focused on creating jobs and growing economic opportunity, investing in education and breaking ground on 10 new schools, expanding access to health care, mental health and addiction treatment, youth outreach and making sure people are safe.
Raising her own daughter in Upper Marlboro, Angela knows Marylanders should have a Senator who both fights for them and shares their concerns. Angela is running for Senate to be a voice for families like the ones she grew up with and who she’s worked for throughout her life.
