A 10-year-old student is capturing national attention after winning a prestigious video essay contest with a powerful message about economic impact, healthcare innovation, and her own inspiring future ambitions.

BelleGabrielle Annibal, a homeschooled fourth grader, earned top honors in a national competition hosted by the Council for Economic Education. Her winning entry explored how local economies influence the global landscape, using the globally renowned Johns Hopkins system as a case study.

In her video, BelleGabrielle highlighted the institution’s investments, groundbreaking research, and leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing its far-reaching economic and societal impact.

“In my video, I explored the Johns Hopkins system… and I concluded by sharing my dream of becoming a plastic surgeon at Johns Hopkins,” she said.

A Dream Rooted in Compassion

Beyond her academic insight, BelleGabrielle’s vision for the future stood out. She expressed a heartfelt desire to pursue plastic and reconstructive surgery—not for prestige, but to help others heal and regain confidence.

“I want to help people who have cleft lip, who have been in accidents, and cancer patients who need reconstructive surgery… so they can truly know that they are beautiful,” she explained.

Behind the Scenes at Johns Hopkins

As part of her prize, BelleGabrielle was invited to spend a day behind the scenes at Johns Hopkins. The experience included meeting the university’s mascot, Jay, and interacting with researchers while wearing her own lab coat—an early glimpse into the career she hopes to pursue.

The experience also reinforced her belief in the importance of uplifting young voices.

“Adults sometimes don’t hear our voices… but Johns Hopkins reached out and supported the youth. They supported me,” she said.

A Family Legacy of Excellence

BelleGabrielle’s achievement is part of a growing family tradition. Her older sister, BelleGrace, previously won the same competition, and education plays a central role in their household.

Her father, Jean-Yves Annibal, serves as her French teacher, while her mother, Trenessa Coffey-Annibal—a graduate of Johns Hopkins—guides her homeschooling journey.

“Encourage that curiosity because you never know what path it might lead them down,” her mother said. “I’m incredibly proud and very grateful.”

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to her academic pursuits, BelleGabrielle is also active in the performing arts.

She recently appeared in a local production of the play Fences, where she delivered lines referencing the Hopkins East Baltimore Redevelopment Project—an 88-acre initiative focused on housing and economic growth through community partnerships.

A Bright Future Ahead

BelleGabrielle Annibal’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential within young minds when nurtured with encouragement, education, and opportunity.

Her journey is just beginning, but her vision is already making an impact.
