FreeMellyMel: Social Media Support For Activist Detained By ICE Gains Traction

by Gee NY

Social media personality and investigative reporter Melissa Ann Atwell, better known as ‘Melly Mel,’ has found herself at the center of international attention after being detained at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Louisiana.

Atwell, a vocal critic of the Guyanese government, is reportedly facing deportation, though the details surrounding her detention remain unclear.

Her situation has sparked widespread support from political activists, human rights advocates, and members of the Guyanese diaspora, who are now calling for her immediate release.

A Voice for the Voiceless Silenced?

Atwell, known for her outspoken views on corruption and governance in Guyana, has amassed a significant following on social media.

Over the years, she has called out both the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the opposition for alleged mismanagement and abuse of power.

Her bold stance has led to multiple legal actions against her, including a $100 million defamation lawsuit filed by Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall in November 2024.

The Guyanese government has denied any involvement in Atwell’s detention. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo dismissed speculation about the administration’s role, stating:

“We don’t obsess over Ms. Atwell. There are many others far more extreme than her … and we don’t obsess about them.”

However, critics argue that Atwell’s detention is part of a broader effort to suppress dissent and silence government critics.

Supporters Rally for Atwell’s Release

Atwell’s supporters have taken to social media, demanding transparency and justice. Hashtags such as #FreeMellyMel and #JusticeForMellyMel have been trending, with many raising concerns about her well-being and legal representation. U.S. Attorney Shellon Washington, Esq., has confirmed that she is representing Atwell but has refrained from commenting on the specifics of the case.

Political parties in Guyana have also weighed in.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) condemned Atwell’s detention, suggesting that it was politically motivated, according to Guyana Times.

“Her activism placed her at odds with the PPP, and she became a target for the administration. This detention is just another chapter in the regime’s attempt to intimidate those who dare speak out,” the AFC stated.

Similarly, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) demanded answers regarding whether the Guyanese government had any role in Atwell’s detention.

“We remain committed to upholding democratic principles, including the right to free expression,” the PNCR said in a statement. “We urge the government to clarify its role, if any, in this case. Citizens should be able to express their views without fear of persecution.”

Reports suggest that Atwell’s detention may be tied to a sealed indictment, but no official confirmation has been provided. Her past run-ins with Guyanese authorities include a police search of her mother’s home in September 2024.

The search, which Atwell’s lawyers claim was unlawful, resulted in allegations of narcotics being found nearby. However, her mother, Debbie Tyson, has denied any involvement, questioning the legality of the warrant used in the search.

Tyson has since spoken out against her daughter’s detention, stating:

“My daughter has done nothing wrong except speak the truth. They are trying to silence her because she is not afraid to expose the truth.”

What’s Next for ‘Melly Mel’?

As Atwell remains in ICE custody at the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana, uncertainty looms over her fate.

Human rights organizations have begun mobilizing, demanding fair legal proceedings and transparency regarding her detention. Guyanese expatriates in the U.S. have also expressed concerns, with some organizing protests outside the detention center.

For now, Atwell’s supporters continue to rally behind her, insisting that her detention is an attack on free speech and press freedom.

Whether she faces deportation or secures legal relief remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—her case has ignited a global conversation about political dissent, human rights, and the price of speaking truth to power.
