Former First Lady Michelle Obama is adding a new chapter to her growing career in media and storytelling — this time on Broadway.

Obama, alongside former President Barack Obama, will make her Broadway producing debut with a revival of the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Proof.

The production will be presented through the couple’s media company, Higher Ground Productions and is scheduled to premiere this spring.

The play will run as a limited engagement at the Booth Theatre, with previews beginning March 31 and opening night set for April 16.

A New Stage for Michelle Obama

The Broadway project represents the latest expansion of the Obamas’ storytelling ambitions since launching Higher Ground in 2018. While the company has already found success in film, television, and podcasts, the revival of Proof marks its first venture into live theater.

In a statement about the production, the Obamas said the play reflects the kind of meaningful storytelling their company aims to support.

“Proof is exactly the kind of story Higher Ground was built to champion,” the couple said. “It asks profound questions about brilliance, doubt, and what we inherit from the people we love most.”

For Michelle Obama, whose work has often centered on education, culture, and community impact, the move into theater continues a broader effort to elevate stories that explore complex human experiences.

The production will feature several well-known performers making their Broadway debuts.

Ayo Edebiri, an Emmy Award winner, will star as Catherine, the play’s central character. She will appear opposite Don Cheadle, an Oscar-nominated actor who will portray Catherine’s brilliant but troubled mathematician father, Robert.

Additional cast members include Jin Ha and Samira Wiley.

The revival will be directed by Thomas Kail, the Tony Award–winning director widely known for his work on the hit musical Hamilton.

A Landmark Play Returns

Originally written by David Auburn, Proof premiered in 2000 and quickly became one of the most acclaimed plays of its time.

The story follows Catherine, a young woman coping with the death of her father, a once-renowned mathematician who struggled with mental illness. When a mysterious notebook containing a groundbreaking mathematical proof is discovered, Catherine must confront questions about genius, inheritance, and whether brilliance — and instability — may run in her family.

The play earned both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.

Building a Storytelling Legacy

Since its founding, Higher Ground Productions has built a reputation for award-winning storytelling. The company won an Academy Award for the documentary American Factory and has earned multiple Emmy and Grammy awards.

With the upcoming Broadway revival, Michelle Obama continues expanding that influence into new creative spaces — bringing a celebrated theatrical story to a new generation of audiences.
