Parents Awarded $2.25 Million After Autopsy Doctor Shared Images of Decapitated Infant Without Consent

A Fulton County court has awarded $2.25 million to Jessica Ross and Traveon Taylor, the grieving parents of a baby allegedly decapitated during childbirth, after ruling against the autopsy doctor who published graphic images of their infant without their consent.

The emotional case stems from a tragic incident in July 2023 at Southern Regional Medical Center, where Ross was in labor for nearly 10 hours before her baby was allegedly internally decapitated during delivery.

Ross and Taylor say the hospital staff attempted to cover up the circumstances of the baby’s death, prompting them to seek answers through an independent autopsy.

They hired Dr. Jackson Gates, an independent forensic pathologist, to conduct that examination. But instead of simply providing the findings, Gates later posted disturbing photos of the deceased infant online, claiming it was for “educational purposes.”

Parents Say Trust Was Betrayed

Ross and Taylor were blindsided. According to court documents, the couple was not informed or asked for permission before the images were made public. The parents argued that the sharing of such intimate and devastating images amounted to invasion of privacy, emotional distress, and fraud.

In response, the court sided with the family, awarding the $2.25 million in damages to compensate for their trauma and the unauthorized use of the images.

“This was about more than just a legal breach,” a source close to the family said. “It was a complete betrayal of trust during the most vulnerable moment of their lives.”

While the ruling provides some closure on the autopsy matter, Ross and Taylor’s legal battle is far from over. The couple is still pursuing a separate lawsuit against Southern Regional Medical Center and the medical professionals allegedly involved in the baby’s traumatic death.

At the heart of that case is the family’s claim that hospital staff failed to perform a timely emergency C-section and then concealed the severity of the injury sustained during labor.

A Case That Sparked Outrage

The story has sparked national outrage over obstetric negligence, patient rights, and the ethical responsibilities of medical examiners. Advocates say this case highlights the urgent need for more transparency and accountability in both hospital deliveries and post-mortem examinations.

“This isn’t just about a settlement,” one advocate commented online. “It’s about how Black parents—especially Black mothers—are too often dehumanized in our healthcare system, even after loss.”

As Ross and Taylor continue their fight for justice, their case serves as a chilling reminder of what can happen when medical errors meet ethical failures—and how families must sometimes battle on two fronts just to be heard.
