Woman Dies Following On-Camera Beating by Employees at Indiana Coffee Shop

A 75-year-old Black woman died after a violent altercation inside an Indiana coffee shop, sparking outrage online and renewed questions about the treatment of elderly Black Americans.

Surveillance footage of the incident spread across social media has intensified calls for accountability.

The woman, identified by the Fort Wayne Police Department as Anita Ann Grayson, died following what authorities described as a “battery incident” at a Tim Hortons location on Lima Road in Fort Wayne.

According to police, officers were called to the restaurant on the morning of Wednesday, May 21, 2026, after reports of a disturbance involving Grayson and employees inside the store. When officers arrived, Grayson was found unresponsive. Medics attempted lifesaving measures before transporting her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The incident has become the center of intense public scrutiny after video footage circulating online appeared to show Grayson involved in a confrontation with employees before being pushed or knocked to the ground during a physical struggle.

Police later released surveillance video and additional details about the altercation.

Investigators said Grayson entered the restaurant shortly after 8 a.m. to complain about an issue involving her drive-thru order. According to authorities, Grayson allegedly began verbally confronting a 17-year-old employee before a 20-year-old shift lead intervened and asked her to leave the establishment.

Police allege Grayson attempted to move past the shift lead toward the teenage employee, prompting physical contact between the two women.

Authorities said Grayson then shoved the shift lead and struck her in the face before the two became involved in a fight. During the altercation, police said Grayson grabbed the employee by the hair, pulling out a chunk that reportedly left a raw area on the employee’s scalp.

Two additional employees eventually intervened and separated the women.

After the confrontation, surveillance footage reportedly showed Grayson sitting at a table while speaking on the phone. Authorities said she later collapsed onto the floor approximately 10 minutes after the altercation.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has not yet officially ruled on Grayson’s cause and manner of death. However, preliminary findings reportedly found “no significant contributory injuries,” according to investigators.

Still, Grayson’s family says the official explanation does not answer critical questions surrounding her death.

Her daughter, Tawnda Grayson, publicly rejected portions of the police narrative and said her mother, who suffered from congestive heart failure, should never have been physically confronted inside the restaurant.

“That’s the elderly lady. That’s not how we treat our senior citizens,” Tawnda Grayson said. “We be careful with them. We make sure that they’re alright. We don’t jump on them and attack them. And scare them to death.

She added that her mother had recently begun treatment with a new heart specialist and had been wearing a heart monitor in the days before the incident.

“My mother was wronged in the worst way,” she said. “I lost the matriarch of my family.”

In one of the most widely shared remarks online, Tawnda Grayson condemned the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death.

“You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived. That is diabolical,” she said.

The case has generated widespread reaction online, particularly after viral clips appeared to show multiple employees physically engaging with the elderly woman during the confrontation.

Many social media users questioned whether Grayson’s age and health condition were properly considered during the incident and demanded accountability if criminal wrongdoing is found.

Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker urged the public not to rush to judgment while investigators continue reviewing evidence.

“It’s important for each of us to not draw conclusions until all of the facts have been released,” Tucker said in a statement. “I’m hopeful that the video and narrative that will be released by the Fort Wayne Police Department later today will help alleviate the uneasiness that many individuals have felt over the past few days.”

The Allen County Prosecutor’s Office said no charging decisions will be made until investigators complete their review of all available evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements.

As of Tuesday, May 19, 2026, there were no reports of arrests.
